I was born and grew up in Minneapolis, MN (US), which is where I did my BAs (English, Japanese) and MFA (Creative Writing—Poetry; minor in Studio Arts), at the University of Minnesota. During this time I also spent time at the Scuola Internazionale de Grafica in Venice, Italy, where a Judd Fellowship provided me with the time to work on prints and poems.
In 2006 I moved to Dole, France, where I taught English at Lycée Charles Nodier. In the spring of 2007, my first book (Music For Landing Planes By) was published by Milkweed Editions. Later in 2007 I moved to Nottingham, UK, to write a PhD in Critical Theory. I wrote about love, affect, reading, and deconstruction, and was awarded the degree in 2013. I'm working to make parts of the dissertation into (less academic) essays now—those are about crying, art, and language. And Derrida.
Since July of 2012, I've lived in Ghent, Belgium, which is the nicest city no one visits. If you're passing through, I'll gladly tell you where to get a very good pancake. While living here I've complemented the teaching I did in the US (at the University of Minnesota) and UK (at De Montfort University and through the Poetry School, as well as through an organization I set up, the Nottingham Poetry Series) with teaching at Ghent University and online with the Loft Literary Center.
Her book, my second collection of poems, came out from Milkweed in summer 2013, and I organized a ten-city book tour for myself (funded by the sale of books). In November my chapbook Sweetbriar came out from Dancing Girl Press.
These days, I'm doing a little teaching, a lot of editing and design, and a good deal of writing. I continue to work producing books and a journal for the micropress I run, MIEL. As far as writing goes, I'm working on a novel about an archivist who experiences a collapse of time and space just after the 2011 earthquake in Touhoku, Japan. I'm also at work on a collection of essays that looks like it's going to be two collections: one about gardens and being female and England, and one about art and travel. There are also a bunch of short stories sitting around in my hard drive, and eventually I suppose they'll become something more substantial. At the moment I'm not working on a collection of poems actively, although something called Interlude, which is made up of very long poems, is in progress. I also have three other manuscripts—Scale model of the world (inexhaustive), The Book of Splendor, and Ceriserie—that are finished and floating around in various submission queues.
